Development aid

SOS Children's Villages provide development aid in poor countries

In order to sustainably improve the living conditions of children and families in poor countries, SOS Children's Villages is committed to development aid and development cooperation. Through schoolshealth stations and self-help projects for families, we contribute to the development of communities. The development aid projects of SOS Children's Villages are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Development aid for the good of children

Our child- and family-oriented development aid projects are part of the neighbourhood aid that emanates from our local SOS Children's Villages. Our local staff know the local conditions and work on site with families, communities, self-help groups and aid organisations. This partnership-based, community development approach promotes self-help and ensures sustainability.

Development aid through self-help projects

Poverty breaks up families and destroys the future of countless children. Development aid through self-help projects SOS family strengthening empowers parents to offer their children a perspective through their own efforts:

  • Families are gradually empowered to help themselves: through seeds for farming, vocational counselling and training courses, as well as micro-credits for business start-ups.
  • Family assistance particularly supports single mothers and their children, as they are especially hard hit by poverty.

Development aid through education

Providing girls and boys with schooling and education is one of the most effective means of sustainable development aid. Through educational work, SOS Children's Villages lay the foundation for social and economic development:

  • In Africa, Asia and Latin America, many SOS Children's Villages have their own schools and vocational training centres. These are open to children and young people in the area surrounding the Children's Villages.
  • SOS family strengthening enables children from families in need to attend school, e.g., by helping with school fees.
  • Through educational work, SOS Children's Villages specifically supports girls and mothers who are denied the basic right to education in many regions of the world.

Development aid through medical care

Illness and poverty exacerbate each other. Children suffer most of all. SOS Children's Villages therefore provide medical development aid, and we are committed to the fight against child and maternal mortality, as well as HIV/Aids:

  • SOS Children's Villages operates health stations and clinics in developing countries. In this way, we offer children and families in the surrounding area of our Children's Villages basic medical care.
  • In addition, SOS family strengthening provides medical care for families in need.
